The Luing Breed, pronounced Ling, was evolved by the Cadzow brothers on the Island of Luing  which is situated off the West Coast of Scotland.

Full credit is given to the two great beef breeds which were the foundation of the Luing - the Beef Shorthorn and the Highland of the 1940's. No two British breeds are more complementary to each other, with both of them having contributed something of great value to the Luing. Among these qualities are the ruggedness and hardiness gained from the Highland and the fleshing qualities from the Shorthorn.

The herd on Luing was started with the selection in 1947 of some of the best first cross Shorthorn/Highland heifers that could be procured. These heifers were bred to a Shorthorn bull. The British Government officially recognised the Luing as a breed in its own right in 1965. (source:The Luing Cattle Society)

The Cassafuir herd of Luing cattle was started in 2003 to produce pedigree breeding stock with cows and heifers drawn from Cadzow Brothers on the Island of Luing, Merkland Luings in Dumfriesshire and Buckholm Luings in the Borders.

The Luings thrive on an 'Easycare' regime living outdoors throughout the year grazing the Cassafuir Muir during the winter months with a daily bite of concentrate to maintain condition. Calving is outdoors in March  and April with the herd going onto in-bye grass in May until October. The steers are wintered under cover on silage and are sold on at 12 months old.

The first bull was a Cadzow bull called Yukon and his replacement (below) is another Cadzow bull called Zappa. Our own heifers will breed for the first time in 2007.

The Cassafuir herd is a member of the Biobest Herd Care Animal Health Scheme www.biobest.co.uk to screen for BVD, IBR, Lepto and Johnes. The Herd is vacinated for BVD and Lepto, and has disease free status for IBR and Johnes.
